White Paper:
DSL-CPE Interoperability

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology is undergoing rapid growth within the telecommunications marketplace. According to the DSL Forum, in early 2004 DSL subscribers grew at an annual rate of 77% globally and 52% in the USA. Worldwide there are more than 73 million DSL subscribers. Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) technology is widely deployed in most markets, and new equipment based on Single-Pair High-Speed DSL (SHDSL), ADSL2+, and Very High-Speed DSL (VDSL) technology is now entering the marketplace. As many Local Exchange Carriers (LECs) move toward a retail model for providing DSL Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) to their customers, the need for a standardized assessment of DSL equipment interoperability is becoming critical to the continued success of DSL-based broadband services

This paper discusses DSL equipment interoperability: what it means; why it's important; and how the industry is addressing interoperability. The Telcordia Technologies (Telcordia) DSL Testing Services Laboratory is one means of assessing DSL equipment interoperability.
