Policy Management

Telcordia policy management researchers are exploring new ways to automate mobile network operations to keep users connected and services flowing, even in the most dynamic and/or hazardous conditions.

By developing coded "rules" based on what-if scenarios, and programming those rules into network management systems, we are giving mobile networks the ability to stop trouble before it starts and recover quickly when problems occur or conditions change.

Innovation in Action

  • As part of the Dynamic Re-Addressing and Management for the Army (DRAMA) initiative, we pioneered policy management capabilities for mobile ad hoc battlefield networks.
  • We are now a lead player in the U.S. Army's Future Combat Systems (FCS) project, helping to develop a highly survivable, tactical network where management is automated based on policies. Telcordia is responsible for FCAPS (Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance, and Security) and policy management.

Innovation on the Horizon

  • We are planning to take policy management to the next level by enabling network management systems to generate policies automatically based on mission goals.
  • Limited bandwidth makes Quality of Service (QoS) management extremely challenging in the wireless domain. We are building policy-driven QoS solutions that can prioritize and preempt traffic dynamically based on content urgency.
  • To improve fault management in mobile, multi-platform networks, we are building a policy-based correlation system that can correlate thousands of simultaneous alarms, distill them to locate root causes, and direct corrective action.
