Diagnostics & Prognostics

The growing popularity of telematics is enabling highly diverse, real-time operations and geo-spatial data to be acquired from all types of vehicles.

Now, Telcordia offers a Diagnostics & Prognostics (D&P) system, which allows this rich data to be fully utilized for its diagnostic and prognostic value.

Telcordia operates and supports the system in a secure, high-availability environment. Its automated, flexible interfaces give fleet operators, transit managers, vehicle engineers, and OEMs the power to access, process, and manage their vehicular data for customized monitoring, alerts, reports, and analyses.

Innovation in Action

Automotive

Telcordia has significant experience in diagnostics and prognostics for fleets of development vehicles with major automotive OEMs. These innovative programs use telematics systems to collect data from on-board sensor networks and Controller Area Network circuits.

Data streams are transmitted to the Telcordia server via wireless links, and development engineers and customer service personnel access these outputs through a secure website. The system mines the data for real-time intelligence on individual vehicles to:

  • Generate diagnostics of vehicle systems and components
  • Issue real-time alerts
  • Populate analysis tables
  • Plot vehicle location and status
  • Produce customized reports
  • Generate prognostics of potential, future problems by spotting trends in the data based on algorithms developed by Telcordia data mining experts in close conjunction with automotive engineers.

Our fleet customers are applauding these capabilities, including the regular, automated email reports, which keep them abreast of numerous parameters, including those related to oil quality, engine powertrain, and diesel exhaust systems.

Transit

The Telcordia D&P system supports the operational and administrative needs of bus, light rail, heavy rail, and other transit vehicle fleets.

Our system can receive information from wireless data collection systems that transit operators have already installed on their vehicles. If fleets do not have onboard data collection, Telcordia telematics capabilities can be installed to pull sensor and sub-system controller data into the Telcordia backend D&P system.

Whatever option transit operators use, they can reap significant benefits when diagnostic and prognostic capabilities are applied to these data streams.

The Telcordia system automatically updates individual vehicle and fleet statistics, which transit operators can access through a secure, easy-to-use web portal. Alerts and monitors can be set through the website for delivery via e-mail or SMS. Weekly performance reports are automatically generated and available through the website or e-mail.

Transit operators have the freedom to configure our system for any applications and operating parameters that address their needs, such as:

  • Powertrain Parameters (e.g., engine RPM, engine load, fuel flow, vehicle speed)
  • Diagnostic Trouble Codes (misfires, evaporative emission system leak, MIL)
  • Oil Quality (water percentage in oil, oil level, oil temperature)

  • Telcordia is working with the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration Consortium (VII-C) to develop applications that address two of the most important telematics concerns: security and privacy. Our efforts will help to protect driver information and vehicle communications, and secure the networks with malicious-message detection.
  • We are also collaborating with Cross Country Automotive Services, a leading provider of roadside assistance services, to build an advanced telematics platform that will enrich Cross Country's offerings with streaming entertainment, customized information, navigation assistance, vehicle status reports, and more.

Innovation on the Horizon

  • We are working with a major North American automotive supplier to design diagnostics/prognostics applications that can deliver real-time fuel and operations monitoring, on-board parameter calibration, misbehaving vehicle detection, and crash and obstruction alerting.
