Industry Applications

Healthcare

Telcordia is applying its vast expertise in mobile communications networking and information technology to make e-healthcare a reality.

Our researchers are taking a leadership role in the creation of a new kind of secure, high performance wireless networking infrastructure for health services delivery with carrier-grade quality and security. We are collaborating with device system makers, government agencies, system integrators, universities, and technology experts around the world. We are organizing global meetings and workshops on e-health issues and applications.

All of this work is hastening the day when people will be able to:

  • Monitor blood glucose, vital signs, or heart health from their homes, offices, or vehicles, and share that information with remote healthcare providers
  • Transmit clear x-rays, mammograms, or sonograms around the world to consulting physicians
  • Carry PDAs or authorize access to online sites with all of their health records.

Innovation in Action

  • Telcordia initiated and is leading a new Telecommunication Industry Association (TIA) working group, called TR 49, focusing on healthcare information and communications technologies. TR 49 is developing standards for an e-health network infrastructure and e-health operations support systems, and is serving as a forum for the healthcare and telecommunications communities to jointly explore the best use of telecommunications technologies to improve healthcare efficiency and quality.
  • Telcordia is actively working with European hospitals, medical system providers, medical R&D institutes, and universities on a variety of e-health research opportunities.
  • We have forged a partnership with a major Canadian IT solutions provider to create applications for mobile healthcare monitoring.

Innovation on the Horizon

  • We continue to work with governments in the U.S. and around the world to accelerate e-health infrastructure development.
  • We are creating a "road map" of the healthcare industry to better understand the potential for using technology to lower healthcare costs and improve efficient delivery of health services.
  • We are exploring a variety of partnership opportunities with device manufacturers and healthcare providers.
